A rusted iron bridge over the Indrayani River near Pune collapsed on Sunday, killing four tourists and injuring over 30 others. Eyewitnesses described terrifying moments as the bridge shook violently for five minutes before giving way under the weight of people and parked vehicles.
“Screams Everywhere”: Eyewitnesses Recall Chaos
Amol, a survivor who was on the bridge when it crumbled, said, “I struggled for 15 minutes in the water before grabbing a pipe and pulling myself out.” He recalled hearing desperate screams as people plunged into the swollen river below.
Latika, another witness, said, “At least 50 people were on the bridge, many with scooters and bikes parked on it. Nobody paid attention to the danger signs.”
Heavy Rains, Rusted Structure Led to Tragedy
The Kundmala bridge, a popular monsoon tourist spot, collapsed after days of heavy rain swelled the Indrayani River. Locals claim the structure was old, rusted, and poorly maintained, with no recent safety inspections.
Massive Rescue Operation Underway
NDRF, police, and local rescuers rushed to the scene. 39 people were rescued, but some remain missing, feared swept away by the strong currents. Divers and boats were deployed to search for survivors.
Government Announces Compensation and Probe
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for victims’ families. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar revealed an Rs 8 crore plan for a new bridge was already approved. Deputy CM Eknath Shinde ordered state-wide bridge inspections, vowing strict action against negligence.
